Use the following to address Catholic organizations that use AI in a concerning way.

To Whom it May Concern,

I recently noticed the use of AI images accompanying articles in your publication. The AI models that generated these images are trained by scraping billions of images from the internet. Many of of these images are taken from artists without their consent, compensation, or credit.

As Christians, we should be mindful of using tools that can undermine the dignity of the human person and his or her God-given artistic vocation. Additionally, AI images of religious subjects may unintentionally present theological errors which may be contrary to Church teaching. Because sacred art helps to instruct others in the faith, this is especially concerning.

Fortunately, the Catholic Church has been the largest promoter of the arts for centuries. There is a bountiful and readily available supply of artwork featuring Jesus, Mary and the Saints- most of these images are royalty free. There are also many contemporary Catholic artists whose work would be a great supplement to your publication. A site called https://catholicartistsdirectory.com is a good place to start.

As a visual artist myself, I humbly ask that you refrain from using AI images in your materials. I also ask that will join me in praying for the ethical use of new technology and for artists in the pursuit of their vocations.

May your publication be a light in the world.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
